The Interrupt + UAB: Expanding Whole Health Across Alabama

The Interrupt partners with communities to address the full range of factors that shape health outcomes. In Alabama, that work happens through a growing collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Live HealthSmart Alabama initiative.

Across Alabama—particularly in rural and historically underserved areas—residents face significant barriers to health: limited healthcare access, few nearby clinics, and challenges securing healthy food, stable housing, and reliable transportation. These gaps drive higher rates of chronic disease, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

What We're Building Together

Since 2022, The Interrupt and UAB Live HealthSmart Alabama have worked to increase access to healthy food, physical activity, healthcare services, and educational resources across the state.

The partnership launched in Birmingham and Selma with health screenings, nutrition programs, and educational workshops. In January 2025, the collaboration celebrated a major milestone in Selma: unveiling the rehabilitation of a community park and pond—a symbol of resident-driven progress.

Now, we're expanding that reach across Alabama.

Bringing Health to the Table

A mobile market travels throughout communities across Alabama, bringing fresh fruits, vegetables, and nutritious foods directly to neighborhoods where access is limited.

The Interrupt’s partnerships are driving meaningful change for communities across Alabama. Through our collaboration with Alabama Power, we’re transforming neighborhoods into safer, more welcoming places for residents. And with support from Uber Health, The Interrupt is breaking down barriers to essential services - expanding access to food and healthcare by providing transportation to grocery stores and medical appointments.

By removing transportation barriers and expanding access to healthy food, we're helping Alabamians reach resources that were once out of reach.

Building Healthier, More Resilient Communities

Together, The Interrupt and UAB are proving that community-driven, whole-health strategies can create lasting change—one neighborhood at a time.
